Article: So NOT Over These Gals

So NOT Over These Gals

On March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day, a global day high-fiving the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the globe. This day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality in our society.

International Women's Day has been celebrated for well over a century, with the first day occurring in 1911. Over one million people showed their support at rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, hold public office and to end gender discrimination. Today, International Women’s Day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere and is an official holiday in many countries.

At So Over It, we aim to create an inclusive, accessible luxury experience and as a women-run business, we love celebrating other females in the fashion industry. In honour of this special day, we’ve curated a list of some of our favourite ladies making a mark on fashion today, and every day.

Celebrity Turned Design Guru: Rihanna

IG: @savagexfenty

Let’s be honest, Rihanna is already dominating the makeup industry with her makeup line (we’re obsessed with her Stunna lippy) and now she’s making a HUGE splash in fashion with her Savage x Fenty lingerie. Made in partnership with an elite fashion industry team, Rihanna has launched an accessible, empowering label bringing her sexy fearlessness to the masses.

Reality Up + Comer: Minju Kim

IG: @_minjukim_

Did anyone else become completely enamored with Minju on Netflix’s Next in Fashion? How could you not with her bold colours celebrating the power of femininity? We are completely in love with her energy and (SPOILER ALERT) hope her win brings her massive North American success (although she already has it in spades tbh).

Sustainable Designer: Stella McCartney

IG: @stellamccartney

A mainstay in fashion sustainability, Stella creates eco-friendly collections that are made using sustainable practices such as being completely fur-free and using recycled synthetic fabrics. We can’t emphasize enough how much we support her initiatives as a sustainable designer and look forward to her collections every season.

Mainstay Powerhouse: Vera Wang

IG: @verawanggang

From Vogue to figure skating to bridal, you can’t deny the impact Vera Wang has made on fashion. Her distinctly elegant and modern designs have made her a go-to dream for every bride on the planet and she’s showing no signs of stopping. After a brief break from the spotlight, Vera came back to the runway in 2019 to celebrate her brand’s 30th anniversary with a notable Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Here’s to another successful 30 years Vera!

Local Lady: Maison Corazon

IG: @maisoncorazon

We couldn’t help but give a shoutout to one of our fellow Winnipeggers on the fashion scene — Mercedes of Maison Corazon. From her famous Mystique Feminin shirt to her pink and red soaked Instagram, we can’t get enough. MORE we say, MORE! Mercedes has our heart and we’re pumped to share this small corner of the world with her.

Fashion Critic: Anna Wintour

IG: @voguemagazine

Do we even need to justify this? She’s been on the scene for over 30 years and is arguably one of the most notorious fashionistas out there. Known for her Vogue empire, signature sunglasses, and take no bullshit attitude, Anna is the only person out there that can influence everyone from Brooks Brothers to Donald Trump. A go-to for newcomer designers and upcoming trends, Anna was an influencer before that word even entered our modern lexicon. You can even learn how to be just like her with an online course, which tbh, we kinda do.

Proving Age is Just a Number: Iris Apfel

IG: @iris.apfel

We just want to be her. For reals. At 98, she is a self-described accidental icon who has had several museum retrospectives, a few documentaries and even a Barbie doll created in her honour. Her undeniable sense of humour, love of colour and vast collection of fashion cemented her as a tastemaker early on in society and even more so now that Instagram has latched on to her. Snatch her book if you love her as much as we do and be amazed by all the gloriousness.

Size Inclusive Luxury: Veronica Beard

IG: @veronicabeard

It’s taken a while for the luxury market to become size inclusive. Slowly a shift is happening and one of our faves to launch extended sizes is Veronica Beard. Founded by two wonder women, both named Veronica obviously, the label has set out to fill a void in the market and design clothing for all women. We wholeheartedly approve because no one should be denied the right of owning a signature Veronica Beard dicky. NO ONE.

We’re honoured to feature these ladies of fashion for International Women's Day. Let us know your fave fashion icon next time you're on the ‘gram with us and we hope you enjoy celebrating the ladies not just one day a year, but every damn day of the year!
